CLA Vice President, Mark Bridgeman speaks at Land Factor event at Healey Barn

As Article 50 is triggered, to launch Britain’s formal exit from the EU, more than 80 Land Factor guests attended an event at Healey Barn, to listen to CLA Vice President and Northumbrian landowner, Mark Bridgeman outline the issues and challenges arising from Brexit.

The Directors of Land Factor organised the event to give landowners the opportunity to listen to one of the country’s most authoritative figures on the subject, with a particular focus on its impact on rural estates.

Mark was introduced by Land Factor Director Tom Warde-Aldam, who also gave guests an insight into the development and success of the wedding venue at Healey Barn.   He outlined the part which Land Factor played in securing and delivering the project which is on track to host 140 weddings in 2017.

Mark Bridgeman’s background is in the City, but he has managed the Fallodon Estate in Northumberland for the last 10 years.  He is deeply involved with the CLA briefing and lobbying on behalf of landowners and rural businesses and he is in close contact with Government Ministers and Advisors.

He highlighted that there are over 20,000 laws to be scrutinised and 44 major pieces of legislation to be amended to put Brexit into effect.  His belief is that there will not be a major day one change, but that there would inevitably be a transitional phase to allow a period of adjustment. He was, however, clear about the major impacts that lay ahead for the industry with significant challenges and opportunities for estate owners.

Questions from the floor in response to the presentation reflected regional concerns and highlighted major issues which could arise, particularly in relation to anticipated cuts in funding support for farmers.

The CLA position with its “Red Lines” approach to negotiations is encapsulated in a document which you can access by clicking on the link below:

Mark Bridgeman has been actively involved in the CLA for 11 years. He joined their Policy Committee five years ago as the North East’s representative and chaired the Legal and Parliamentary and Property Rights Committee from 2011-13, during which time he also chaired the Housing Working Group which produced the CLA’s Housing policy document. In 2015, he also chaired the Environment Committee.

Mark was elected Vice President of the CLA at the Association’s Annual General Meeting in 12 November 2015.

Tom Warde-Aldam summed up the evening saying:  “It has been fascinating to hear from Mark about the challenges which lie ahead.  We are all in uncharted territory, but it is reassuring to know that the CLA is working hard on members’ behalf to influence future policy.  Diversified rural estates should be in a good position to weather the storm, but well-informed professional advice will be at a premium.”
